The King’s New Crocodile
A long time ago
On a hill quite high
Lived a king in his castle
With his pet crocodile
For years they raced
And usually won
Their favourite game
A two-person marathon
But the reptile grew tired
His feet became slow
He was no longer cheery
He said please, can’t I go
To a place so delightful
Where I’ll rest for a while
Competitions feel frightful
I’m a weary crocodile
I understand, said the king
An era’s come to an end
Our jolly races are over
But new beginning’s ‘round the bend
To a place of calm
I will drop you off
You can rest and retire
At the shoemaker’s shop.
